It’s the most important time of the year (in the world of fashion that is)—it’s New York Fashion Week. Everyone from fashion editors to Instagram fashionistas are showing up to see, and be seen.
The runways and the streets are giving a nod to the ’90s (so we’re full of nostalgia) – graphics, slips, velvet and all, in large executed in a neutral color palette, with sprinkles of fur, leather and show-stopping sequins. Also prevalent, are ruffles, delicate ballet-inspired fabrics, plenty of daring cuts and clothing that’s so good, it could be in museum in place of art. Although it’s just the beginning, here’s our current takeaway and fashion forecast.
SHOES
Go figure ShoeDazzle is putting shoes first…what can we say, we’re obsessed, and we’re not sorry. When it comes to Fall Ready-to-Wear Tom Ford, whose in-season show displayed brand new fall designs that can be bought today (yay!), paired his flawless looks with an array of buckle-wrapped boots and thigh-highs. Yeezy, the infamous Kanye West brand, also displayed variations of boots ranging from sock boots (a hit this season) to could-replace-your-pants thigh-highs. If you need further proof of how hot the sock boot is, check out 3.1 Phillip Lim’s showcase. These men know style, so it’s a safe bet to follow their lead and get a pair, or a few, of these styles ASAP.
TRENDS
Neutral Territory
A handful of NYFW vets—Nicholas K, Cushnie et Ochs, The Brock Collection (to name a few)—plus a few fairly-newcomers, like Yeezy, and notable guests, like Olivia Culpo, kept things neutral and chic. Embracing natural hues of olive, grey, sand, and, of course, black and white, created an effortless statement whether through layers or minimalist designs.
Bare It All
Cushnie et Ochs featured modern geometric cutouts from shoulders to abdomen, while glamorous Michael Costello extended the off-the-shoulder trend and upped the sex-appeal with above-the-crotch slits that are all over the red carpet (i.e. Kendall Jenner). Jason Wu however, opted for less cut, more sheer with tops and dresses that would make your mother blush. So if you’re feeling fierce and frisky, channel your inner J. Lo and show some (or all) skin. We guarantee you’ll get noticed, and maybe cause a scene. Sorry not sorry!
Ruffle-mania
Apparently they never left, but this time around we’re seeing the trend bigger than ever. From Karen Walker, who kept it everywhere from subtle to in-your-face, to Zimmerman, who made a statement with the details, it's clear that the style is still very much “in.” Even Hervé Léger by Max Azria, traditionally known for skin-tight bodycon pieces, went with a more delicate approach this season, which featured an array of ruffle-detailed pieces that are less salsa, more ballet.
Glam: Glitter, Fur & Animal Print
If you want to be a diva now’s the time. Thanks to Tom Ford, Karen Walker, Michael Costello, Nicholas K and others, you can go all out! In a star-studded show, Ford showed off dyed furs, sequined gowns, and animal prints to suit a queen. Costello opted for rich jewel hues in dramatic fabrics. Even the audience picked up on the trends, with Rita Ora sporting a diamond-like Ford design to his show, and the Goddess of Fashion, Anna Wintour, was spotted wearing a standout animal print coat (if she’s doing it, you know it’s on trend).
